I Built a Complete Home Office for $487—Here's Exactly What I Bought

Everyone posts their $3,000 standing desk and Herman Miller chair setups. Cool. But what if you're working with a real budget?

I just finished setting up my home office for under $500 total. It's comfortable, functional, and doesn't look like a dorm room. Here's the complete breakdown.

The Full Shopping List

Desk: $89

IKEA LAGKAPTEN + ADILS

The internet's favorite budget desk for a reason. 55" wide, stable enough for two monitors, and you can choose your color. Skip the fancy standing desks for now—a good chair matters way more.

Chair: $199

HON Ignition 2.0

This is where I spent the most money, and I don't regret it. Your back will thank you. This chair has actual lumbar support, adjustable arms, and mesh backing that breathes.

I almost bought a $99 Amazon chair. Every review from someone who owned it 6+ months said the padding collapsed. Don't make that mistake.

Monitor: $129

Dell S2421HS 24"

A simple 1080p IPS monitor with thin bezels. Looks clean, colors are accurate enough for non-creative work, and it has height adjustment built in. Don't need 4K for spreadsheets.

If you already have a laptop, consider just using that plus a $30 laptop stand to get it eye-level.

Keyboard + Mouse: $45

Logitech MK545 Combo

Wireless, full-size keyboard with a number pad, comfortable mouse. Nothing fancy but reliable. Battery lasts months.

Webcam: $25

Logitech C270

720p is fine for video calls. Nobody needs 4K for their face in a Zoom meeting. This camera has been the go-to budget option for years because it just works.

Lighting: Free

I moved my desk next to a window. Natural light > ring lights for 99% of video calls. If you need supplemental light, a $15 desk lamp pointed at a white wall works great.

Total: $487

What I Deliberately Skipped

  • Standing desk ($300+): Maybe later. A cheap anti-fatigue mat and taking walks works for now.
  • Second monitor ($130+): I work fine with one. Many people find two monitors leads to more distraction.
  • Mechanical keyboard ($75+): Nice to have, not need to have.
  • Ultrawide monitor ($300+): Overkill for most work.

The Setup Tips That Cost Nothing

Cable management: One pack of velcro ties ($6) keeps everything tidy. Route cables along the back desk leg.

Desk organization: A small box or tray for pens/chargers prevents clutter creep.

Background: A blank wall or simple bookshelf behind you looks better on video than a messy room. Fake plants are like $10 if you want some color.

Sound: A $15 pair of earbuds beats your laptop speakers for calls. Or just use AirPods you probably already have.

Upgrade Path

When budget allows, here's my priority order:

  1. Second monitor (productivity jump)
  2. Standing desk converter ($150-200)
  3. Quality headset for all-day calls

But honestly? This setup handles everything I need right now. The $3,000 setup can wait until the $500 one pays for itself.

What's in your budget home office setup? Always looking for recommendations.
